To Paris for Shopping, Art

With all the shopping and cultural experiences available in Paris, now is the perfect time to plan a holiday to Marriott’s Village d’Ile-de-France. Here are some planning tips for fun daytrips to Paris and the surrounding region:

Just a little over 40 kilometers from your resort accommodations, Paris is close for a daytrip or evening out via the regional train (RER A) or by car.

Head into the heart of the city to experience its famous retail scene, starting with La Samaritaine. This iconic department store recently reopened under luxury brand LVMH after being shuttered for 16 years. Peruse a vast selection of French and globally recognized designers within its art nouveau facade, plus dozens of sweet and savory dining options.

A short stroll away from La Samaritaine is the Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection, a beautiful new art museum showcasing the extensive contemporary art collection of French mogul François Pinault. Spend an afternoon discovering paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, audio works, installations, and performances by close to 400 artists. After viewing the art, dine outside at the top-floor restaurant and cafe surrounded by rooftop views of Paris.

French History 101

To gain insights into French history, head over to Hôtel de la Marine at Place de la Concorde, another new and noteworthy museum. This stately address was once a palace dating back to the 18th century. Originally housing the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, a group in charge of royal furnishings, it later became the headquarters of France’s naval ministry for over 200 years. A walk through the royal chambers offers a glimpse into life during a more regal era.

For a look at the complete history of Paris, head to the oldest museum in the city, Musée Carnavalet. Set in the heart of the Marais neighborhood, this historic building reopened its doors following five years of renovations. You’ll see exhibits dating as far back as the Mesolithic Era as you tour collections that have been continuously maintained for over 150 years.

Royal DayTrips

When near Paris, a visit to the Palace of Versailles should also be on your list. Located about 64 kilometers west of the resort, this opulent former home of French royalty is famous for its hall of mirrors, maze of gardens, and Marie Antoinette’s summer home, the Petit Trianon.

Another noteworthy royal address is the Palace of Fontainebleau. This home to the kings of France since the 12th century, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its ornate decorations and furniture.

Whether you’re looking for an unforgettable souvenir or an education in art and history, Paris is your destination for art and culture.
