Family Fun on Beautiful Maui
By Meghan Miner Murray
Tropical Maui evokes a breezy, laid-back escape. But when you’re ready to do more than lounge by the water, Maui will reignite your spirit of adventure. From exploring jungle waterfalls to hiking rainforests, consider these experiences that will make your next Maui holiday even more memorable.
TAKE A DEEP DIVE
Divers and snorkellers won’t want to miss the waters of Molokini. Here, you can get up close with tropical fish within the arc of a dormant volcanic crater. The offshore islet — a protected seabird sanctuary — surrounds you with calm water and boasts underwater visibility up to 30 metres.
Check with your Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club resort Concierge for more information about chartering a trip.
WALK INTO THE WATER
Not a certified diver? No problem. Skim underneath the Makena Landing and Wailea Beach coastlines in a special underwater scooter. Just walk into the water, don the provided mask and snorkel, and hold on. The scooters do the work as you zoom past yellow tang, triggerfish, turtles, moray eels, and colourful wrasses. It’s fun for the whole family.
For that fully submerged feeling (without getting wet), hop aboard a submarine, which departs daily from the wharf in Lāhāina. You’ll dive 30 metres down to the sea floor where a three-masted replica whaling ship rests.
VISIT A WATERFALL OR OCEAN VISTA
Jungle waterfalls are a staple on the island and can be found in parks and along the Hāna Highway. Ride along this historic highway full of the natural wonders of Hawai’i. Get even closer to the beauty with a .8-kilometre trek on the Kūloa Point Trail, or take the longer 6.4-kilometre Pīpīwai Trail.
WHERE TO STAY
Situated on Kā‘anapali Beach, Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club fuses breathtaking scenery and tropical foliage for the ultimate Hawaiian holiday. Spend the day under the sun in outdoor pools with waterfalls, rejuvenate at the spa, play a round of golf, or explore the local flavour at several on-site restaurants.
